...fashion to turn each new star into a savior? I suspect this has something to do with the frenzy of millennial predictions, spawned by the strike, of the death of baseball. None of these predictions have come true, of course, but nevertheless the attitude lingers that baseball is in deep trouble and needs the Herculean feats of McGwires and Ripkens to keep from teetering into oblivion. This is a myth. Suggesting that baseball needs saviors is to suggest it is in a worse state than it actually is, and only further perpetuates the myth...

...plot is an unlikely stretch of the imagination. It also doesn't matter much that Private Ryan, played by Matt Damon, appears too late in the film to develop as a character, thus making the story's framing device--an elder Private Ryan saluting the grave of his savior--seem a bit forced and hokey. What matters most is that the story is merely a vehicle for transporting the viewer from one spectacular, eerily realistic battle scene to another. A great part of the movie's near-three hour length consists of guns, tanks, limp bodies, bloodshed and explosions...

Slaves to "Baywatch" and KFC all over the planet have a new savior: Canada has declared war on U.S. pop culture.
