...Word (conceived, produced & acted by Jimmy Savo). Little Jimmy Savo with his big black eyes, dwarf's body and appallingly baggy pants has often been called one of the world's great clowns, a pantomimist in Chaplin's class. Highbrows have rhapsodically declared that he brings the Commedia dell' Arte back to one-man life. Hundreds of vaudeville audiences have paid him the simpler tribute of howling when he whispered the song River, Stay 'Way From My Door and shooed the river away with childlike gestures. His last Broadway appearance was in the Rodgers & Hart...
Some of the twelve scenes started toward straight satire but most of them wound up utterly cuckoo. When Savo performed a drunken surgical operation, his patient's insides yielded a number of colored balloons, a string of sausages, and finally a Punch & Judy show. As a washerwoman by a stream, he was interrupted, for no ascertainable reason, by the passing - of an invisible fox hunt, but returned to the amorous contemplation of a union suit. ...never have I seen your like as warriors. I am proud of you as though you were my own children ; I am as proud of the men from the northern fields as of the sons of Ostro on Bothnia's plain, the Karelian forests, the Hills of Savo, the fields of Hame and Satakunta, the leafy copses of Uusimaa and Sarsinais-Suomi. I am as proud of the sacrifice tendered by the child of the lonely cottage as of the child of the wealthy...
...with The Boys from Syracuse is no mere Who's Whooey. Every one knows his job. Every cook makes a contribution to the broth. Playwright Abbott provides a sound book (least brilliant part of the show) ; Director Abbott, whirlwind direction that keeps it moving, moving, moving; Comic Jimmy Savo contributes wild-eyed dimwit mischief; Fat Girl Wynn Murray, dishpan antics and Amazonian sex threats; Lorenz Hart, brash, bawdy, witty lyrics (best line: She was so chaste that it made her very nervous); Rodgers, a gay, bright lilting score, never better than it is in This...
...working in tragedy and 'high comedy' requires anything greater than performing on the variety stage. . . . At least, these ordinary vaudeville performers do not get across by special pleading that they are 'pure spirits.' " One thing Mime Enters found in performers like Bill ("Bojangles") Robinson. Jimmy Savo, Moran & Mack and the Fratellinis was timing raised to a high art. She raised it, in some instances, higher. Her use of castanets in a dance-pantomime called Boy Cardinal, composed in 1932, was something Bojangles or even the late great La Argentina might have envied...
