Lounguine proudly airs Russia's dirty laundry: the pervasive alcoholism, the anti-Semitism, the suspicion and self-destruction. Rock star Piotr Mamonov has a snaky charisma as the musician, and American tenor-sax legend Hal Singer blesses the project with his presence. At last May's Cannes Film Festival, Taxi Blues won the best-director prize. Today it has both news and nostalgic value. We can hear it wail, in a minor key, from the sweet and recent past: the early days of Soviet...
...snazzy and right up to the second. It has good melodic hooks (thanks to Farriss) and strong rhythmic underpinnings (courtesy of his brothers Tim, 31, on rhythm guitar, and Jon, 28, on drums, as well as bassist Garry Gary Beers, 28). It has a surprisingly soulful flow (from the sax of Kirk Pengilly, 29, who also plays lead guitar) and, in Hutchence's dramatic vocals, anthemic ambitions...

The punkers, who held rather prescribed, even fashionable ideas about anarchy, were surprised to see a band of brooding barrio boys in plaid shirts who sang tunes with suspiciously literate overtones. The band, which includes guitarist-vocalist Cesar Rosas, bass player Conrad Lozano and sax man Steven Berlin, found itself looking out into a Chinese restaurant with black walls and a rankly aromatic carpet. So much for crossover dreams. But that grungy club gave them an enthusiastic constituency that remained faithful even as it grew...
