Apart from the actual plot, the aspect of "Citizen Kane" for which it will always be famous is Welles' use of his cameras. The photography is magnificent. Although professionals usually say that these camera effects are consciously "unusual," to an ordinary moviegoer they make the film memorable. The wildly shifting perspectives, the entirely new treatment of three-dimensional effects, the odd angles of approach, and the relation of lights and shadows contribute at least as much drama as the script...
There were several times during the evening when I thought "Mrs Gibbons' Boys" might save itself by turning into a complete farce. Unfortunately, it never did. The character of the mother, as played by Lois Bolton, is frequently pathetic: she is not insane, (as say, the two sisters in "Arsenic and Old Lace,") but is obviously genuinely in love with her sons. She is thrilled to have them back home even if it means a jail-break, and she is also quite serious about her Gas Company beau...
Some anti-Harvard feelings among the police and towns people is understandable, if only for economic differences. However, I suspect that this feeling in a policeman is indicative of some psychic disturbance which, harmful enough in itself, could be extended to other prejudices and obsession. Needless to say, a policeman is daily called upon to pass judgment many more times than the robed figure behind the bench. A mentally-ill police officer can be a dangerous thing. Periodical psychiatric checkups should be required for all public officials, including policemen and congressmen...
