Atop Tokyo's National Stadium, the Scoreboard flashed one last message: SAYONARA WE MEET AGAIN IN MEXICO CITY, 1968. Darkness fell, the Olympic flame flickered and died. There was nostalgia, but no regret, no fear that reflection would do anything to dim the luster of the XVIII Olympiad. For in 15 wondrous days, 6,600 athletes from 94 nations had tumbled, leaped, twisted, soared and splashed to a kind of special immortality...

Pigeons are now too expensive for most papers; three years ago even Tokyo's largest daily, Asahi (circ. 4,100,000), gave away its 300 birds with the announcement: "Time has come to say sayonara to Hato-san." Still, rival Mainichi keeps two trainers on its staff, spends $800 a month on a flock of 150. Yomiuri Shimbun has just completed new concrete dovecotes, plans to expand its present 20-bird flock to at least 100 in time for the Olympic Games that take place next fall, just 15 winged minutes across Tokyo-and smack in the middle...

Sang Tokyo's biggest newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun: "Sayonara, Mushroom Clouds." IT'S A TRIUMPH! headlined London's Daily Express. In the name of Pope Paul, the Vatican's L'Osservatore Romano called the Moscow accord "in harmony with the profound and universal wishes of mankind...

Dutiful Flying. Everything went right from the beginning. Sigma 7 bobbed into a beautifully circular orbit, and calm, cool Navy Commander Walter Marty ("Wally") Schirra, 39, was in buoyant good humor. "Sayonara!" he cried when the escape tower separated, and soon he reported "all systems green and go." Then he settled down to cheerful, competent and dutiful space flying. He watched the instruments closely and talked with each control station as he passed near it. Like the other astronauts, Schirra ran into trouble with the water boil-off system of his space suit, and its temperature became so high...

...Milwaukee-born former movie-house manager, Klauzar says: "When I was in showbiz the secret was constant gimmicks." Some gimmicks come easy, like giving free champagne and 16-ounce steak dinners to any G.I. on his birthday, and again when he completes his tour of duty and must say "sayonara" to kindly Kadena. But only a showbiz expert like Club Manager Klauzar would have the daring to go shopping for Stateside acts like the De Castro Sisters, Sammy Davis Jr. or Ray Anthony's band to provide a floor show for the tired airman who has spent a hard...
