Since the outbreak of war in Europe, the importance of Chungking and Tokyo in the U. S. Ambassadorial scale has increased tremendously-so much that only London and Paris now rank them. There are good reasons. Britain, France, Germany and, to a lesser extent, Russia have all turned Westward. Of important powers, only Japan and the U. S. are just now conspicuously active in the Orient. Masters of the East and West shores of the Pacific, they are natural opponents. One of them is big, rich, complacent, lazy, subject to delayed reflexes; the other small, inordinately ambitious, troubled with intellectual...
Sweden's large-scale purchases of munitions, fuels, certain foods and other "preparedness goods" were revealed to have run up during the past nine months an import balance of 345,000,000 kronor, whereas for the similar period last year Sweden's surplus of imports over exports was only a mildly depressing 140,000,000. In Cambridge, however, those days are only a little less alive than they were in the twenties, and there is no real reason why they should...

Under the impact of Nazi press agitation and their own large-scale defense preparations, the peoples of the Low Countries began to experience a real war of nerves, complete with mobilizations, floodings, frontier incidents (see p. 19). The two Governments, with their Cabinets meeting almost continually, got out assuring and reassuring statements, persuaded the Dutch and Belgian press to keep cool heads. But all Belgians and Dutchmen had to do to learn the newest sensation of the moment was to turn on British and French radios. In the U. S. eight-column streamers shouted "GUNS ROAR ON DUTCH-NAZI BORDER...
