...pair of elegant swindlers preying on a group of social snobs who turn out to be just as fraudulent, in their own way, as the crooks. The culprits team up in Victorian London, where one is the perfect lady's maid (Greer Garson), the other a scampish, penniless aristocrat (Michael Wilding). Moving on to gullible San Francisco, where wealthy climbers are eager to fawn on English nobility, the maid passes for a marchioness and the blue blood for the perfect butler. Their plans go awry, and the comedy shifts from drawing room to bedroom, when Lady Greer arouses...

Private Life of an Actor (Siritzky International) is the first film made by Sacha Guitry, France's scampish old do-it-all of stage & screen, since he was cleared of charges of collaborating with the Nazis. The movie was mildly applauded in Paris, but stirred up an anti-Guitry demonstration in Lyon (TIME, June 7). On its own account, it is worth little fuss of any kind. Added but unnecessary wrinkles are furnished by eyebrowed Oscar Homolka, a gangster who steals Barrymore's machine for nefarious purposes...

Another one-act opera by another British conductor had its première last week in Munich. Samuel Pepys was its name, Albert Coates its composer. Librettists Richard Price and Lieut.-Col. W. P. Drury concocted a characteristic Pepys plot out of their imaginations, had the scampish Samuel entertain an actress, Mistress Knipp, with wines and spinet-playing; had Mistress Pepys return inopportunely but not until Mistress Knipp had time to disguise herself as the Merry Monarch Charles II honoring his Secretary of the Admiralty with a visit. Müncheners greatly liked this synthetic Pepys given them...

...musket from her moribund husband, although this one ran second in the balloting and won first place in three cities. Instead, it was Bryant Baker's striding figure of a woman whose skirts are blown backward in a prairie breeze, who carries a Bible in one hand, leads her scampish belligerent little boy with the other. This had received most votes in eleven cities; by far the largest total out of the 123,000 votes cast...
