Fascismo made of the hodcarrier a god. Not quite. Gods have no need of earthly champions, whereas, when Fascismo was rocked by the Matteotti scandal (TIME, June 23, 1924 et seq.), the hodcarrier was perhaps only conserved in his godhood by the railway mechanic...

...powder train of suspicion flamed toward Mussolini and was barely stifled without blowing up the Fascist party. The entire Aventine Opposition walked out of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and has not returned* as a protest against both the crime itself and the ruthless methods of suppressing the scandal adopted by Fascismo. Not long ago (TIME, Oct. 19), Premier Mussolini cried: "When the slayers of Matteotti are tried, the trial will be Fascismo's greatest triumph!" The trial (TIME, March 29) ended last week with the conviction of three men for the "unintentional murder" of Matteotti. They were sentenced...

Last January the Public Prosecutor finally had him indicted on nine counts for the conversion of 635,000 kronen ($165,000). By jury trial last week he was found...

Although they have undoubtedly added moral and social simple-mindedness to political chicanery, long the besetting sin of journalism, the tabloids have, nevertheless, demonstrated that there is a "Main Street" on Third Avenue. Where Gopher Prairie gobbled private gossip, the Bowery relishes public scandal. Among the millions most unfortunately herded in cities, the starved minds fed by the new press are the literate leaders. It is in part their grotesque reflection in the picture papers that gives shape to the apprehensions of "The New Barbarians" and truth to the pessimism of "The Phantom Public...
