Actually, what happened was that Amanda Ripley, who sits down the hall from me, called Spillane and asked if she had signed anyone from the Florida scandal, which inspired Spillane to call Enos. So, really, it's a beautiful story about an intrepid reporter, a scrappy agent and democracy itself coming together to create something for me to ridicule...
Speaking of the slick man from Little Rock, Bill should have been utilized more by Al. Understandably, the veep wanted to separate himself from Bill due to the sexual and financial scandal that unrelentingly followed the former Governor of Arkansas. Trying to step out of Bill's mammoth shadow, Al rarely mentioned his connection to the president and told Bill to stay home. I can see why Al would initially want to create this distance, but come crunch time in the fall, Al should have campaigned with Bill on the issues and sent Bill out to preach the gospel...

This is indeed to Houellebecq's advantage, as his novel gives the avant-gardes a bad name. Beneath its glossy veneer of scandal, The Elementary Particles is an amazingly shallow and silly read. Filled with poorly realized characters, indifferent writing and ludicrous leaps of logic, the novel will not leave you pondering...

It relates to the disappearance of Kiev journalist Georgy Gongadze, who was very critical of Kuchma and is believed to have been kidnapped and killed. Several days ago the speaker of parliament revealed a tape recording made by a former bodyguard of Kuchma, which supposedly has the president meeting with senior officials and demanding in very harsh language that the journalist be killed.
