Many gadgets make it easy to send e-mail on the road, but scanning and faxing a document are trickier. Hewlett-Packard has a new handheld device that can scan and store up to 50 pages of text. Unlike most scanners, the CapShare 910 ($700, available in December) uses a wireless infrared port to transmit the scanned pages to some notebook computers, which can then be used to fax or e-mail the text. While the lightweight CapShare is easy to use, its reliance on infrared connections could limit its appeal...
...than they were two weeks ago. But are they Russian-ruble cheap? So ugly that they scare the dog? The answer depends largely on whether you believe that interest rates will fall further and corporate earnings will hold up in the face of Asia's spreading ills. A quick scan of Wall Street illustrates the debate. At Paine Webber, chief strategist Ed Kerschner holds the rosy view that stocks "have not been this cheap since October 1990." Chief guru Abby Cohen at Goldman Sachs similarly says, "Stocks are trading at undervalued levels." But at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, chief strategist...
...Alpine outbreak had spread to 13 states--or at least it seemed to have. Thirteen states could also mean 13 separate outbreaks. Earlier this year, the CDC took a step to eliminate such uncertainty, employing an innovative network of biotech machines called PulseNet. The hardware allows scientists to scan a bacterium and come up with a sort of genetic fingerprint unique to that cell line. Studying samples of the Wyoming E. coli as well as bugs from the surrounding states, the EIS researchers discovered that their profiles matched perfectly. The Alpine infection, it appeared, was indeed widespread...
Wednesday, 12:15 p.m., Kosovo. An armored van carrying Holbrooke stops along a one-lane dirt road just south of the hamlet of Istinic. Rusted farm implements obstruct traffic, one of many barricades K.L.A. insurgents have set up. U.S. security agents scan the surrounding forest, fearing that the halted convoy may become a target for stray gunfire. Holbrooke orders the vehicles to head back to the town of Decane, which Serb forces burned last month. Coming through the town earlier, the convoy passed deserted buildings, but in the town's center, two dozen people sat at an open-air cafe...
Another difference: every woman, pre- or postmenopausal, has a bone scan to determine evidence of osteoporosis, because of hormonal changes a very real threat to those in their 50s. Most men don't go to the bone-densitometry lab. I did so only because of the association between kidney stones and bone loss. Mild bone loss in both men and women begins in the late 20s. But with the onset of menopause, women begin losing 1% to 5% of bone mass each year...
