That remarkably good record can be attributed largely to improvement in air-traffic control. Until the mid-1960s, air-traffic controllers had to rely on old-fashioned radar to scan the skies and keep track of moving "blips" that represented individual aircraft. Now the controllers' vision has been increased enormously by improved radar and new electronic gadgetry. Every aircraft that flies above 18,000 ft. and in designated control areas carries a radar transponder that answers ground radar by flashing an identifying signal. The ground radar is assisted by banks of computers that display on the radar screen right...
...Watch List. The operation was centered in the U.S. post office at New York's Kennedy Airport, where as many as six CIA agents worked in cooperation with top U.S. postal officials to open, scan and photograph the letters. Anyone whose name was on a "watch list" had his mail opened if it was sent to or came from the Soviet Union. The committee revealed three names on the eclectic list: Biologist Linus Pauling, the left-leaning Nobel laureate; Labor Leader Victor Reuther; and John Steinbeck, the late novelist...
...curfew, and the lights start winking out. A few miles away, villagers desert quiet country lanes for tile-or thatch-roofed cottages. And a few miles beyond that, perhaps an hour's drive from the teeming capital and its 6.5 million people, U.S. and South Korean soldiers anxiously scan the dark, austere terrain of the Demilitarized Zone. All along the 150-mile-long DMZ, from concrete-hardened bunkers or on tense patrols, they watch through the night for infiltrators, saboteurs or commandos from the Communist North...
...Missouri School of Journalism and the National Press Photographers' Association assessed three issues of TIME published last year: our Man of the Year issue on King Faisal, with ten pages of color from the Middle East; "Inside the Brain" (Jan. 14, 1974), which included a color X-ray scan of a tumored brain; and the Aug. 19 issue, which photographically chronicled Gerald Ford's succession to the presidency. Judgments were based on layout and editing as well as quality of photography...
...refined tests using radioactive isotopes. First they injected human albumen tagged with radioactive iodine-131 or technetium into an arm vein. The radiant particles circulated through the small blood vessels of Nixon's lungs, and a scintillation scanner took an electronic "picture" of their distribution. Nixon's scan showed a blank area on the outer side of the right lung: the clot had settled there in a small artery, leaving an area of dead tissue where no blood is circulated to take up oxygen. Then the doctors ran a second test to determine whether Nixon's respiratory...
