...would say -- has , mellowed Hartman. Impatient by nature, he now knows that his hopes for a radical change in national attitudes will require decades, perhaps centuries to be realized. But unless Judaism, Islam and Christianity discover new foundations for pluralism in their respective traditions, a paper peace will offer scant solace. The shabby state of Israeli-Egyptian relations teaches that a treaty grounded in political calculation rather than moral awakening is worth little (and can be abrogated easily). "If an Egyptian-style peace is all we ever get," says Hartman, then "I will forever walk scared in my home, wondering...

Congressman Ralph Regula of Ohio recently proposed an alternative: returning the city to Maryland, which donated the land 199 years ago. That idea got scant attention until Governor William Donald Schaefer surprised everyone by saying he would accept "retrocession." But black leaders such as Jesse Jackson have denounced the proposal, Schaefer has backed away, and congressional insiders say forget it. Pachter spends virtually all of his review relating (1) what Beckett plays are like to watch (i.e. unconventional, disturbing), and (2) how the actors were to watch He gives two scant sentences to the director's choices. He never hints at issues of staging or interpretation, such as the show's conformity with or departures from Beckett's original directions. Ethiopia. As one of the troika of African states -- with Angola and Mozambique -- that remain most closely aligned with the East bloc, Ethiopia's regime has had scant luck with Marxism-Leninism for some time. More than a year ago, Moscow warned officials in the capital, Addis Ababa, that its multimillion-dollar military-assistance package would be significantly cut when the current agreement expires next year. Since then, the last of several thousand Cuban soldiers have departed, more than one-third of the 2,500 Soviet military and development advisers and their dependents have pulled out, and it is rumored...

Matthew's belated disclosure was prompted, said his lawyer, by his concern that an innocent man not be prosecuted. That was scant consolation to Boston's black community, which had felt persecuted for more than two months as the result of a lie. Boston N.A.A.C.P. president Louis Elisa decried "the lynch- mob mentality" ignited by the case. The Rev. Charles Stith, a prominent leader in the black community, accused local news media of "overkill" that whipped up racial tensions with biased accounts of "the worst of what black people are supposed to be." Elisa demanded an apology from Mayor Raymond...
