Then why see the movie? That's the better question. A scant hour and a half long, padded with clips from earlier Rocky pictures, adding nothing to his mythic, let alone human dimensions, it lacks even the primitive suspense and crude capacity to release underdog emotions that permitted its predecessors to conquer one's better judgment. The ritual this time celebrates only cynicism and, perhaps, star egotism. In Rocky IV, the underdog is the noise-mauled audience, and one can only hope that it will come off the canvas and take a hike. Or better still, refuse the rematch...
...Robert Hill remarked that China is not "a democracy of our type." Quite. The so-called "peaceful rise of China" is a global brand; it has been marketed as such to Western consumers, who don't think long about China's prisons, its taste for capital punishment or its scant regard for workers' rights. U.S. newspapers and TV gave him scant attention, but the Frankfurter Allgemeine and Le Monde devoted big articles to his bravura performance. In Britain he has made too many media enemies to receive fawning reviews, but his victory in Washington got blanket coverage and enhanced his stature. Even among his detractors, there was admiration for how effectively he stuck his thumb...
...Just scant hours before Nichols ultimately announced his resignation, he was approached by current and former members of the UC’s executive board in an orchestrated attempt to force his resignation. His leadership, attendance, and dedication to the UC were questioned, and threats to embarrass him and his friends were issued. Ten UC representatives, the number required by the UC’s rules, were prepared to submit a petition of impeachment against him. It was under these circumstances that Ian Nichols resigned...
