Statistically, Buchanan's debut was respectable--39 yards rushing on 11 carries and 6 of 13 passing for 83 yards. But overall, the offense lacked everything but penalties. There was scant organization and little variation. Too many of Buchanan's rushing yards were by accident rather than by design...

...will worsen the Interest rates have been rising through the industrialized world since July, as governments try to curb inflation. But the U.S. has been playing catch-up with European and Japanese rates. At present, U.S. interest levels are no higher than existing U.S. inflation rates; thus there is scant reason for money traders to buy dollar-denominated short-term securities, since they earn nothing. Other currencies are a better buy. For example, even though the West German prime rate of 7.75% is more than five percentage points lower than the U.S. prime, West German inflation is about one-third...

Once a profitable puddlejumper, Air New England expanded rapidly after it won certification in 1975 from the Civil Aeronautics Board. Perhaps too rapidly. It now struggles to maintain a schedule of 200 flights a day with scant working capital and a modest fleet of 20 propjet planes, which include its own 19-seat De Havilland Twin Otters and 48-passenger Fairchild 227s and two leased 50-seat Convair 580s. Seldom are there planes available for back-up use. So even though Air New England is classified in the same category as national carriers like Eastern and United, it continues...

...also concerned about Fidel Castro's influence on Nicaragua's civil war and on the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), a broadly based collection of Marxist and non-Marxist leftists held together mainly by hatred for Somoza's regime. The evidence of such influence is scant, though U.S. intelligence reports indicate that since late May a Panamanian DC-6B cargo plane has operated regularly between Panama, Cuba and Costa Rica carrying newly trained rebels and a variety of weapons...

...every way to the fumes and peeves of the throughways and the sardine-can intimacy of the time-rupturing jet planes. Yet, in spite of the heroic past, the U.S. has let its passenger rail travel system fizzle and sputter down into a national embarrassment, Today service is scant, schedules are unreliable and amenities are often sparse. The equipment includes, in the forthright phrase of Amtrak President Alan Boyd, "a lot of junk." The situation might be called ridiculous if only in light of the universal recognition of the passenger train as the most expedient mode of moving large numbers...
