...message, not its music, that is offbeat. That message is preached by the movement's founder, Victor Paul Wierwille, 54, a trim, tanned, fast-talking six-footer who likes to wear Western-cut suits with a scarf around his neck and tool around the countryside on a big Harley-Davidson. A former minister of the United Church of Christ who has studied both at the University of Chicago Divinity School and Princeton Theological Seminary, Wierwille is now a crackerbarrel theological promoter who grandiosely claims to have done the only "pure and correct" interpretation of the Bible since the First...

...most of it comes from the other side. We could laugh off their peculiar taunts of "Yale Reject!", knowing the opposite to be almost exclusively the case. Down in New Haven, one could assume, they had nothing better to do than buy blue and white scarves (the official Yale Scarf, incidentally, is manufactured in Harvard Square), carve their initials into the tables down at Mory's, import girls for football weekends. She returned home with a 56-year-old embroidered Egyptian silk scarf and an 81-year-old American patchwork quilt. Mindful of her 13 successful years as a Seventh Avenue designer, Saks bought the lot at first sight. Displayed...

...probably like Flesh. It's a supermarketful of genitalia, mostly male, which makes it a peculiar supermarket indeed. Who can resist Joe D'Alasandro, his phallus wrapped up in a St. Laurent scarf like an obscene Christmas present for Isadora Duncan? Who can pass up Candy Darling, a transvestite with rubykeeler red lips and a feather boa, reading '40's Hollywood pulp sags aloud to prove she couldn't care less about Joe's ongoing blow job? Who could miss a Warhol lampoon of Blow-Up, with Joe cast as Verushka...

...only slower, so that it may be observed easily by the naked eve, moved with the lecture officials and a small police escort to the right side of the stage; while his wife, dressed in the long, dark gown of the Muslim woman and an incaradine scarf covering her hair and neck, walked with an elegance of her own as she was accompanied to her seat on the opposite side of the stage. Ali's police escort seemed the ultimate superfluity. Ali's presence is so commanding as to appear capable of arresting a bullet or blow in mid-flight...
