...seemed to float in the air forever-the crowd hanging on breathlessly-she would suddenly take off, sliding up the scale as fast as any sax to land on a sultry, slightly off-center note. With consummate skill, she flecked moody ballads with flirtatious spoken asides and highly rhythmic scat passages: "Do-be-do-be-bop." She never missed a beat, or a wave of applause...

...impersonations that Turner unveils in a trendy drag bar in uptown Manhattan. Knowing that the gig amounts to his Big Break in the business, Turner pulls out all the stops as he belts out, "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." We hear Channing's raps, Ella's scat-singing, Dietrich's off-keys and a host of other readily recognizable ladies who have captured America's fancy and/or heart. Turner has clearly made it in the drag queen biz by the finale of the number, judging by the roaring ovations on the screen and in the theater...

I caught this identical show last year at the Valley Forge Music Fair, outside Philly, and Ella was still incredible: still a great voice, still great scat-singing. She did the usuals: "Let's Do It," and a few Harold Arlen and George Gershwin numbers. Peterson was a little more on the cocktail, night club side, a little too staid for my tastes. ...commercialism and top-40 rock, or to original, honest music that disregards industry and public pressure to record million-selling albums. "Be-Bop Tango" is among the best cuts on the new record because it typifies Zappa music and Zappa humor. If you listen carefully to George Duke's scat singing, you hear strains of Thelonius Monk's "Straight No Chaser" and a Zappa remark about 4/4 time: "It's a pedestrian beat. You don't dance...

...ROSALITA" is a juicy, scat-sung Van Morrison-type song in which Springsteen wants to steal away his girl friend from her parents to spend what seems to be a life-long communal orgy in the hangouts of New York. The song builds up to a seemingly final crescendo with terrific fast loud chorus. Where can he go from here? But the music keeps on--you feel like shouting. Then all of a sudden it is happening, the entire band is standing up there in the studio, chanting "HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY"--it is like the Ohio State football...
