...heavy bout of debriefing, this time, of course, by the KGB. "Yurchenko will go home to a hero's welcome, be put on the lecture circuit there, and then, when nobody's looking, be shot--if he's lucky," predicts a senior official of the U.S. intelligence community. That scenario assumes, of course, that Yurchenko is what he appears to be: a onetime defector who changed his mind. Yet sometimes, even in the land of mirrors, the most obvious image is the real one. --By James Kelly. Reported by David Halevy and Gregory H. Wierzynski/Washington

There's more to worry the truffle old school. "We saw in experiments that Tuber indicum is very dominant, competitive and aggressive," frets Gerard Chevalier, a researcher at INRA. He paints a scenario in which errant spores from imported Chinese truffles disperse into the air, contaminate the European countryside and beat the fungi out of their more fragile cousins. Already the ancient truffle terroir is being hammered by pesticides and urbanization. Two centuries ago, French black truffles were so abundant that they were cheaper than tomatoes; since then, the average annual truffle harvest in the Périgord region and beyond...

Both share much with their fellow Jesuit Martini, but conceded that they could live with someone like traditionalist bulwark Joseph Ratzinger as Pope. It's yet another sign that the dream scenario for some progressives in the Church that somehow a Pope will emerge from this Conclave with plans to undo John Paul's doctrinal dictates is doomed to die on the vine. But it's still early in the week, and TIME's team of reporters here will do its best...

Disgusting, snarls his revolutionist cellmate Valentin (Raul Julia), who is being tortured to betray his beliefs and his underground comrades. But perhaps he protests too much. For he encourages Luis to keep spinning out his scenario (which is visualized in wickedly parodistic flashbacks). Ultimately Valentin confesses that his revolutionary ardor is no less a romantic fancy than Luis' old movies are. Both are substitutes for the more immediate and commonplace forms of love that elude these fantasists of impossible perfection. And both surrender to a final irony: real life may be the cruelest of all illusions, a fantasy-film star...
