Something has been lost in the translations. Isherwood's stories were taut, bittersweet recollections of bohemian Berlin in the early '30s. By the time Scenarist Allen and Director Fosse have wrung them out, what's left -with one exception-is mostly slack and sour. The exception is their vibrant star Liza Minnelli, who cocks a derby over a green-shadowed eye and struts off with the movie, or as much of it as is worth carrying...
...strand that have been a staple of English films since Room at the Top. This obviously calls for serious measures from Zee. Not even a ritual slitting of her wrists in the bathtub has any appreciable effect. With a gut instinct for elementary Freudian geometry (so thoughtfully supplied by Scenarist Edna O'Brien) Zee sets out to bed Stella herself and play out the triangle of X Y & Zee to its conclusion...

But in the great Hollywood tradition, Scenarist Arnold Schulman opts at the end for those grand old panaceas, universal love and acceptance. "Who am I to judge you?" Andy asks Rosalind. He quotes a little Zen, allows that he loves her, then wanders off, having passed from adolescence to sainthood without even a pause at awareness...
...lugubrious rummaging through the Romanov attic, this is a Love Story with historical footnotes. Extracted from Robert K. Massie's bestseller, it seems to have started as an attempt to make what the boys back at the studio call "an intelligent epic." For Scenarist James Goldman (The Lion in Winter) and Director Franklin J. Schaffner (Patton), that apparently means endless vistas of gilded scenery, plus dreary dialogues about the future of Russia and the Czar's responsibility to his family and his increasingly obstreperous subjects...
...news broadcasts, its pastel photography reminiscent of countless TV commercials. Monte Hellman, director of Two-Lane Blacktop, even appears in a cameo role. All this does not amount to much more than another episode of Sunset Strip angst, but there are reassuring indications throughout that Director James Frawley and Scenarist Floyd Mutrux are capable of better work...
