There is nothing like a fierce, searing expose of a corrupted ideal. And that is precisely what Scenarist Erich Segal has written-nothing like it. Instead, he offers The Games, a limping fiction about that quadrennial glory trip, the Olympics. Segal, a fast man around the popular fiction track, is better known as author of the four-handkerchief bestseller, Love Story. In Games, audiences need only bring Kleenex. This time around, Segal has adapted Hugh Atkinson's novel of hate and added a naive undertone of "There-I-said-it-and-I'm-glad...
Director Frank Perry and his scenarist wife Eleanor have a bad habit of taking important themes and mashing them into pulp. They did it with mental illness (David and Lisa) and youth and violence (Last Summer). Now, with Diary of a Mad Housewife, they have reduced the agonies of middle-class marriage to a snide, skin-deep Cosmopolitan-style short story of social climbing and terribly sophisticated adultery...
...Daisy Gamble, a latter-day Brid?y Murphy whose soul shuttles from 18th century England to contemporary New York. Arnold Scaasi designed her knockout New York wardrobe; Cecil Beaton did her up for the London sequences. What more could a girl want, except maybe a movie? Instead, she has Scenarist-Lyricist Alan Jay Lerner's drab romance of Daisy and Doctor Marc Chabot (Yves Montand). The girl's especuliarities drive Chabot mad-do you hear?-mad, mad, mad! But ultimately he learns that scientists must leave the infinite alone, and Daisy goes back to her star-playing lover...
...really. Despite its science-fiction quality, this voyage may be much closer to reality than even the movie scenarist imagined. In fact, NASA officials are so anxious to proceed with the development of the first reusable space shuttle system that a test flight may be made within five years...
...editor for Director Norman Jewison. Ashby seems to have picked up Jewison's stylistic slickness, which is stamped all over the movie like a muddy footprint. One Landlord love scene consists of almost nothing but enormous closeups of lips and hands against a glaring white background. Ashby and Scenarist William Gunn make things easy on themselves throughout by portraying the tenants as a group of whimsical, life-loving characters out of The Time of Your Life; Elgar's snooty family is caricatured with pig-bladder subtlety...
