...agreeing to Van Stratten’s terms, Arkadin decides to pay Van Stratten to find out the details of his past, ostensibly due to amnesia. As Van Stratten wanders the world, Welles gives center stage to a series of glorious character actors representing the changes in the international scene??the Dutch man is an avaricious eccentric, the titled Frenchwoman is forced to work in a clothing store, the Englishman is ignored until the end, and the Mexican representative is corrupt, but just wants to be left alone...
...second half of the evening. Though choreography by Larissa D. Koch ’08 was often a bit too theatrical, the four dancers gave a very cohesive, technically impressive, and vibrant performance. Two pieces from “Don Quixote” followed: “The Dream Scene?? and “Kitri Variation.” The group in “The Dream Scene?? gave a mostly clean performance in this difficult Marius Petipa-based choreography by Rudolf Nureyev. Both soloists, Jennifer S. Love ’09 and Quadrat, were impressive?...
...Other photographs are impressive for their balanced complexity. “Typical Nativity Scene?? is near-maddening with its hundreds of miniature snow globes, potted plants, dolls, Disney characters, and doilies, but Alejos rescues the scene from pure cacophony. He steps away and sets the nativity scene off-center, transforming it into a cohesive unit. Still, if we come close to the photograph, we can just make out the detail of each miniature...
...exhibit, “Peasants Gathered at Christmastime in front of the Mayor’s Office” combines the tempered cacophony of “Typical Nativity Scene?? with the mixed attentions “Group of Peasants.” Alejos’ camera peers from above a town square upon thousands of peasants...
...through the characters’ struggle and growth. This was not necessarily the case: instead of presenting an overall arc, “rainbow/streets” was impressionistic, combining short scenes, monologues, song, and dance to present an image of being young and black in America. The last scene??s lack of context highlighted the main downside of this approach: a lack of growth and a certain static quality to the characters and situations. This drawback, however, was more than offset by the play’s ability to present a wide variety of experiences...
