Sounds like a great story with fast-paced action and quick scene changes, right? Wrong--Swimming to Cambodia is simply a monologue, filmed before a concert audience. However, Gray's mesmerizing story and Jonathan Demme's brilliant use of lighting and sound make the viewers forget that it is simply watching a man speak. The audience becomes wrapped up in the story as though it were a film with a Plot, characters and scenes...
...this production in the Cabot House living room works very nicely indeed--like most Harvard house common rooms, it looks like an upper-class living room. The period music is nice, but the production could use some more of it, it uses thee same songs at each tedious scene change. Perhaps Pulido should pull out the rest of soundtrack to Radio Days...
Administrators currently hope through discipline that they will make an example of the SASC blockaders and thereby prevent future blockades, a passive strategy. In fact, a more active, and a generally accepted alternative would be for police to guarantee a visitor's right to speak on the scene. When provocative, controversial individuals wish to spout their views on campus, the University must execute a strategy that accepts the inevitability of protest action while assuring rights of free speech. ...right, the administration must not ignore the option of students to demonstrate their opposition by civil disobedience. Instead, police and other officials should take it upon themselves to assure that a speech reaches its proper conclusion, even if such assurances require negotiation with or removal of demonstrators on the scene. Instead of adopting a defensive, defeatist attitude, officials should enforce freedoms of speech and movement with purpose while properly dealing with protesters who use legitimate tactics to make their oppostion known...
