...over Shanghai's Bund, accidentally or intentionally slipped two bombs out of their bomb-racks and blew in the fronts of both the Cathay and Palace Hotels, which face each other across teeming Nanking Road. Two hundred and twenty people were killed and mangled. And had the ghastly scene been directed in a Hollywood studio, the cinematography could scarcely have been handled better. The MARCH OF TIME'S Cameraman Harrison Forman, an aviator, explorer and author just down from Tibet, was sitting inside the Cathay when the terrifying explosion took place. The Hearst News...
Judged by the progressive destruction of a Lincoln Zephyr which, rammed head on into the curb, burns throughout Forman's, Wong's and Krainukov's films, Wong was the first man on the scene. (Presumably Forman lost time by having to rush upstairs from the Cathay bar to get his machine.) But, according to the best guesses of U. S. newsreel people, Wong must have been turned back by the police after making his first shots, for it is Krainukov whose camera turns in the most gruesomely inclusive report of the bombing...
Toronto during the past fortnight was also the scene of some mechanical ingenuity. Hospital for Sick Children had only one mechanical respirator, and needed at least one more. The only professional manufacturers of this life-saving device are: Warren E. Collins, Inc. of Boston, which makes respirators designed by Professor Philip Drinker of Harvard's School of Public Health; and J. H. Emerson Co. of Cambridge, Mass., owned by John Haven Emerson, inventive son and namesake of New York City's onetime commissioner of health. The two companies long quarreled over patent infringements. Meanwhile, since 1929 only...
Last week "King George" once more loomed on the Nevada scene with a big stack of blue chips. He let it be known that he had regained control of Hotels Riverside and Golden and stood to make considerable on a new mine. When his personal crash came, "King George'' had found others as glad to grubstake him as he had always been to grubstake the down-&-out. State Senator Noble Getchell gave him a half interest in a low-grade surface mine near Winnemucca where they are now building a gold mill due to begin operations about...
...sank to one knee, and, with gestures, once more recited his famous poem, The Face on the Barroom Floor. Poet Titus said he now makes his living picking huckleberries. He wrote his famed poem in 1872 as the fifth episode of a seven-canto poem: The Ideal Soul. The scene was taken from a tavern in Jefferson, Ohio. There are now more than 1,000 versions that have sprung up anonymously...
