MARTHA'S VINEYARD is, above all, an island, and to the 8000 small-town folk who live there year round, it is The Island. Seven miles of open sea separate the scenic mass of rubble deposited by Ice Age glaciers from the mainland and its ravages--a distance too short to protect against commercialism, but long enough so that many might think the Island is miraculously immune. The Vineyard stands on its own, it seems, and the assured independence most Islanders assert was reflected in a famous headline a few years ago, when poor weather scuttled the regular ferry sailings...
There is currently no statutory restriction on the number of signs per mile. But the present law gives the Department of Transportation the power to regulate, and the department permits not more than three signs for a scenic or historical attraction or a natural wonder within a 75-mile radius, and a maximum of one sign per mile. Thus the proposed "limit" of three per mile is an expansion. The bill throws the door open to a tremendous billboard proliferation by enlarging the present "informational" category...
...House bill would also permit six "directional" signs per mile-three facing each side of the highway. As the amendment is worded, "directional" is an umbrella term covering "rest stops, camping grounds, food, gas and automotive services, lodgings, natural wonders, scenic and historic attractions." The American Institute of Architects contends that by defining directional so loosely, the bill legitimizes 80% of the signs outlawed by the 1965 Act. John Francis, highway beautification coordinator for the Department of Transportation and the bill's most vociferous critic, estimates that it could result in the proliferation of more than a million billboards...
Romantic appeal aside, the big reason for the sudden chic of sea burial is economics. Says Charles Denning, founder of the Neptune Society: "For the past hundred years undertakers have made a rich living by selling tin boxes that rust in the ground, pink gowns and booties, and scenic plots overlooking freeways." These standard "hole-in-the-ground" funerals, he notes, cost $1,200 to $1,900. Burial at sea runs a mere $250 a throw...
...annual three-day field trip through the scenic hills of western Galilee. In all, 180 students were eligible for the trip. In light of the alert, the families of 77 refused to let their children go. Principal Shimon Ben-Lulu was upset over their recalcitrance. "The route has been examined," he insisted. "We have authority from the army, and guards will be along. Everything will be all right." One student said later that he had been warned his report card would be withheld if he did not make the trip...
