...grace, but in general this is a triumph of starch over sizzle. The earnestness with which the women sell themselves would make them comfy at a Mary Kay Cosmetics convention. They radiate not fantastic beauty but fanatical effort. For some, striving to be universally liked can trigger the scent of desperation. Horn says, "They are interviewing for a job--the job of Miss America," and the pressure shows. It doesn't help that they are chaperoned and shadowed by so-called State Traveling Companions and two hostesses to a contestant. They are prisoners of the fame they seek...

...think it was the scent that did it," reports People page editor Belinda Luscombe." A cultural milestone of sorts was reached this week with the announcement that "The Bridges of Madison County" has fallen off the New York Times bestseller list, ending a 162-week run during which the book sold 10 million copies. "Bridges" first hit the list in August 1992, and has stayed there longer than any fiction book since "The Robe" captivated readers in the 1950's for 178 straight weeks. ...sometimes he fools you. His new album's title track perks and chirps along like a burger jingle. Not until you peel off the tinsel and listen to the lyrics--"You had a scent for scandal/ Well here's my middle finger/ I had 40 years of pain/ and nothing to cling to"--do you hear John raging at his homeland and his fickle fans. "It's sort of a 'screw you' song," says Taupin. "I put myself in his shoes and heard him saying, 'This is me, accept me for what...
