Elizabeth spent a lifetime contending with the issue of marriage and royal heirs and the challenges raised by men who would steal her scepter. Marriage is what 16th century women were for, and Queens needed heirs. She engaged in the most manipulative, interminable courtships, driven not by love but by politics--though she was tirelessly fond of suitors. Leading a weak country in need of foreign alliances, she brilliantly played the diplomatic marriage game: at one time she kept a French royal dangling farcically for nearly 10 years. Always she concluded that the perils of matrimony exceeded the benefits...
...body from the tree? Will Christ be anointed by whores, be lover of liars, lover of women, a Christ dragged and dirtied? Will he be Christ with faith flagging, flogged, wielding wildly thorns? Will he be Christ rising from rudeness and doubt to take the cross like a shining scepter? Is this Christ the song, Christ the storm, Christ the lamb or lion? Who steps onto our stage, into our lives, dies for us? For whom will...
Across from Shylock are Antonio and Bassiano, played by Joe Nuccio '00 and Jay Chaffin '01. They are portrayed as unheroically as possible. Simpering and effeminate, Antonio hides himself behind the props of gloves and an ornate, scepter-like stick. The reversal of the hero roles in The Merchant of Venice, though effective and interesting, is at times taken a bit too far. When Bassanio throws himself at Portia's feet--kicking and yammering petulantly...
...crowd at the base of the enormous bloodred pyramid has been standing for hours in the dripping heat of the Guatemalan jungle. No one moves; every eye stays fixed on the building's summit, where the king, his head adorned with feathers, his scepter a two-headed crocodile, is about to emerge from a sacred chamber with instructions from his long-dead ancestors. The crowd sees nothing of his movements, but it knows the ritual: lifted into the next world by hallucinogenic drugs, the king will take an obsidian blade or the spine of a stingray, pierce his own penis...
...early '60s, between Elvis and the Beatles, two corporate names ruled rock 'n' roll: Spector and Scepter. Phil Spector's over-the-Top-40 sound has often been memorialized; now THE SCEPTER RECORDS STORY is related in a 65-song set on three CDs. Owned by Florence Greenberg, a New Jersey mom, the diskery made its rep with girl groups (the Shirelles) and treble rousers (the Isley Brothers, the Kingsmen). It then officiated at the marriage of gospel and pop, with Dionne Warwick selling peerless Burt Bacharach ballads. The set includes many savory hits and some obscure gems: Bacharach...
