When it was all over, the capacity audience of 1,600 surprised everybody, including itself, by bursting into rapturous applause. Partly this seemed to express appreciation on purely sensory grounds for the novelty of Schöffer's pleasantly mad bag of magical tricks. Partly it was relief that the show was over. Mostly, perhaps, it was gratitude that the audience's grandest option had not been exercised-extending the basic 78 minutes of programmed sequences to the maximum of ten hours...

...with peculiar furtiveness about their diplomatic coup. Last week West Germany's foreign policy troubleshooter Egon Bahr, newly named Minister for Special Tasks, arrived in East Berlin to sign the basic treaty providing for formal diplomatic relations between the two states. He was whisked by fast car from Schönefeld Airport to the Council of Ministers building for a hasty signing ceremony with East German State Secretary Michael Kohl. The event was carried live on West German television but not on Eastern broadcasts. Nervous party bosses forbade East Berliners to gather in the streets, apparently fearing politically embarrassing...

Interflug's low fares also pose a problem. After studying the possibility of using Schönefeld, Swissair concluded that it could not compete there profitably. For the same reason, Austrian Airlines, which has a mutual landing agreement that permits it to operate out of Schönefeld, does not make use of the privilege. If East Germany really intends to attract Western airlines, it will have to raise Interflug's subsidized fares on competing routes, and that in turn might well make Schönefeld less attractive to travelers. But even the highly preliminary talks held...

Consequently, several of the carriers are now talking to East German officials about using Schönefeld. KLM, in fact, now stops there "on demand" if enough passengers on its Amsterdam-Moscow flight want to get off or on in East Berlin. The airlines' interest in East Berlin is genuine enough, but it might flag if a new agreement permits expanded air service between Tempelhof and Western capitals...
