Needless to say, Powers annexed the 220 by a country mile in addition to the clean-cut victory over favored Bob Schaper of Brown in the 100. The only fly in the ointment as far as Power's performance was concerned was that George "Diesel" Gibbons was sick and unable to swim. It was Gibbons who nipped Powers in an exciting 440 two years ago to give the Bruins their only tank win over Harvard, and last year the same Mr. Gibbons decisioned Powers in another close quarter mile race...
Ailing Bus Curwen was better than expected with a 5:07 440 and an easy second in the 220. The absolute dearth of talent on the visiting squad (with the exception, of course, of Schaper, Carter, and Gibbons) was clearly demonstrated in the relay. The Harvard quartet of Bob Sceery, Tom Shrewsbury, Dave Stearns, and Bill Jay had things all to themselves in 3:52.3. They won by about 25 yards...
...captains Bob Schaper, George Gibbons, and Sophomore Sherb Carter stand out on the invading squad like a light-house in a storm, Schaper, who finished third in last year's Intercollegiate 100, will be favored in both the 100 and 50. His partner, Carter, is almost as good and might conceivably get a pair of seconds in the sprints. Lonnie Stowell and Captain Frannie Powers will give him plenty of opposition in both of these races, however, Powers even has a chance to upset Schaper in the century...
...Schaper, Soltysiak, and any two other men Barry has would not have had a ghost of a chance against a final Crimson relay team of Bosworth, Curwen, Cutler, and Stewell--which would have been used if needed. Ulen could have rolled up 51 points all told but naturally preferred to give some of his younger sprint men a chance to acquire valuable meet experience...
George Dana and Chet Sagenkahn were not at their best in the low board dive, but the former managed to carry off top honors with 89.53 points. Jim Curwen and Dave Stearns pushed Bob Schaper right to the finish in the 50 in 24.1, and these four points just about put the visitors out of their misery...
