...poetry in this issue is not all obscure. John Hollander's songs, sung by a picaresque hero called Dick Dongworth, are the most notable contribution. Hollander combines a slight air of humor and intense irony to good effect. He varies his rhyme scheme to fit the special tone of each poem, and his rhythm fails only at one point in the last song. Less monumental, but equally effective, is "In Rainwoods," written by an anonymous poet, blasphemously dubbed Sam Hall. The rainwoods contain soft red leopards and a girl and a great sense of wonder...

Motives aside, Eisenhower as President has shown that when he does take personal control over foreign affairs, his creative leadership is apparent. The Atoms-for-Peace plan, the Geneva Conference, and the scheme for mutual aerial inspection have all shown that the President when he chooses, is his own best Secretary of State. What he found was a simple-minded materialism-human beings were atoms in a cruel and incomprehensible cosmic scheme. There was always, as he ends one story called Free, "the innate cruelty of life, its blazing ironic indifference." The same theme runs through other stories...
