Defending the Pound. In office, Wilson has proved to be a man of the middle-and that is where the votes are in today's affluent Britain. To be sure, Wilson's government has raised pensions, liberalized the national health-insurance scheme, and instituted long-range national economic planning. But the steel industry has not been nationalized. He has kicked the unions far harder than any Conservative would have dared, castigating Britain's raise-happy workers for "sheer damn laziness." And he has dared to defend the pound with the simple old-fashioned remedy of deflating demand...

...number of projects I have going is ridiculous, and I would have to be a Renaissance Man to handle them all. But I have bluffed my way; and my ingenious worddropping scheme has convinced at least some people that I am possessed of virtue, that I am a true "generalist" (that is to say, generally good in everything). And just as my shoelaces got tied, my projects, somehow, will be completed...

...decline which was to commence in the next ten years. The picture is an effort in the grand style of the rococo painters. The ornamental detail dominates the picture and the subjects are lost. Furthermore, the figures are treated with a schematized shorthand that fits into a monumental scheme and robs them of their individual humanity. This propensity for slipping into an abbreviation of of human qualities recurs. The expression of the victim's face, in Watson and the Shark, is unconvincing as an expression of terror. Instead, it is a stony, symbolic expression that dehumanizes much of the experience...

Gravity-Powered Travel. To be sure, some formidable obstacles would have to be overcome before his scheme could become reality. At its midpoint, a Washington-Boston tunnel would be five miles below the surface of the eartha technically difficult and prohibitively costly bit of construction. In addition., the subterranean temperature at a five-mile depth might be as high as 265° F., and a passenger vehicle would need an immense cooling system. Finally, because a perfect vacuum could not be created within the tunnel, and because the vehicle would probably have to ride on some sort of rail, friction...

...came as a countersuggestion to another cru scheme put forth by the French. Unhappy that the dollar and pound alone have special status, the French have argued for a return, of a sort, to the gold standard. The French cru would be issued in proportion to each country's supply of gold; settlement of payments between nations would be made partly in gold, partly in crus. Finally, the French want supervision of the cru system to be in the hands of the Group of Ten, which holds most of the world's reserves...
