...Yorkers. The city's board of education last year set up a pilot project in the Ocean Hill-Brownsville section to test school decentralization, which would allow "the community"-the parents themselves and the neighborhood leaders-to run the schools. Only that way, supporters of the scheme claim, will ghetto children get sympathetic teachers with a more flexible approach to their special needs. Most professional, unionized teachers deeply distrust the idea. And when the Ocean Hill-Brownsville governing committee asked for the transfer of 13 teachers that it considered objectionable, 350 other teachers in the area abandoned their classes...
Cambridge, however, is equally full of excellent prints and reproductions, though an important distinction should be made between the two. A print is a work which the artist himself designed to be printed in many copies and therefore planned in composition, color scheme, and impact with this in mind. A reproduction is a photographic copy of an original -- any original...
Sudden Smashup. Before the central bankers hammered out final details of the scheme in Basel, the signs of a monetary storm were all too evident. Buffeted by the Czech crisis and persistent clamor for an upward revaluation of the strong West German deutschmark (a move that was drawing money out of London), the pound had sunk to within a whisker of its post-devaluation low of $2.38¼ in foreign exchange centers. Under Tito's plan, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia will create a sort of two-country common market that will enable each country to draw on the other's investment capital, labor pool and special industrial talents. There were some signs, most notably...
There is the elaborate sight gag: Clouseau exits from the wrong door of a plane and gets carried out with the luggage. The Malapropism: "You are pushing my leg." The convoluted scheme: a gang of thieves disguise themselves in Clouseau masks to enter Swiss banks. The third time round, however, the mixture is flat and tasteless. Bud Yorkin's slovenly direction makes the film look as if every expense had been spared, trapping Arkin in a farce of habit that will probably retire Clouseau to oblivion -one picture too late...
