Many fans of E. Annie Proulx were dismayed when they heard that the lead character in her award-winning novel The Shipping News would be played in the film version by JOHN TRAVOLTA. Looks as if they had good reason. The movie, which was to be directed by FRED SCHEPISI and to co-star Travolta's wife KELLY PRESTON, has hit stormy water. After two years of preproduction, Columbia and Schepisi were unable to agree on a script. No one's talking, but Schepisi was apparently in favor of the faithful-to-the-book version turned in by LAURA JONES...

...enough, the keepers--gentle souls all--are funnily up in arms defending their pets. A wandering tarantula motivates a genteel striptease, and the mean mogul gets his comeuppance. The script, by Cleese and Iain Johnstone, lacks Wanda's mean and giddy inventiveness, and the directors, Robert Young and Fred Schepisi, don't wind their material very tightly. Still, this good-natured movie is very much in the spirit of those ancient comedies from Ealing Film Studios in which nice, silly people defend some enclave of old-fashioned sanity against the forces of brute modernism. And that's a tradition worth...

...performances in Schepisi's film are almost uniformly excellent. Stockard Channing, recreating the role which she originated on Broadway, is the very image of elegance and sophistication; she adds just the right touch of humor and compassion to make her completely believable as the character won over by Paul and ready to change her entire life because of him. Donald Sutherland embodies endless savoir-faire as her art dealer husband...
