Rupert Murdoch, 45, the Australian-born press buccaneer, first met Dorothy Schiff, 73, the coquettish editor in chief and publisher of the New York Post, one afternoon about six years ago. "I rang her up, as fellow publishers tend to do," he recalls, "told her I was in town and would like to have a look at her plant." It was love at first sight. "I lusted after the Post," he says. So had many others. The oldest continuously published daily in the U.S., the Post (circ. 500,000) has been the only afternoon paper in the nation...

Publisher John J. Geoghegan reports that Schiff has twice read the galieys of Potter's manuscript...

Her husband at the time (she has had four) was George Backer, a New York City real estate operator who worked in F.D.R.'s early political campaigns. Backer had converted Dorothy, then 33, from lifelong Republicanism to an active role in F.D.R.'s 1936 drive. Dorothy and Franklin began seeing each other often at Hyde Park...
...Congressmen were screening video tapes of Midnight Blue, an hour-long soft-core TV program that until last month was seen weekly on public-access channel J of Manhattan Cable Television, a subsidiary of Time Inc. Blue had been blacked out by Manhattan Cable, explained Vice President Charlotte Schiff Jones, because of a "catch 22" of conflicting regulatory requirements...
