Once again North Carolina seemed in the grip of political schizophrenia. The calm and articulate Gantt, a former two-term mayor of Charlotte, may appeal to the progressive voters who gave the state a reputation for moderation by electing such Democrats as Terry Sanford, first as a forward-looking Governor and in 1986 as North Carolina's other Senator. The tart-tongued Helms, on the other hand, has won three terms by pushing hot-button hard-right issues -- pornography, school prayer, busing -- among whites in more rural parts of the state. To have a shot at Helms, local experts...
Despite two decades of feminist victories, only women seem to feel the emotional schizophrenia that comes with having children. The fact that "working father" and "daddy track" have not worked their way into the language is instructive, if not disconcerting. So is the survey that shows that wives put in an extra month of work at home each year, time their male counterparts can spend at their desks or, unfairer still, sleeping. If a woman has a fulfilling career, she still yearns for more time with her child. If she stays home, she is bound to wish for some...
After carefully poring over "Telling Secrets at RAZA," the author's distinct stylistic intent becomes visible. Take for example his word choice in characterizing RAZA. He uses words such as "sin," "controversy," "imprisonment," "fate" and "schizophrenia." Anyone ingesting these words would certainly be astonished--the type of astonishment one would experience while reading a Harlequin romance...
...Core suffers from schizophrenia. According to Courses of Instruction, the Core tries to train students in "the knowledge, intellectual skills, and habits of thought that are the hallmarks of educated men and women." But Harvard claims the Core does not require "digestion of a specific quantum of information," presumably because any specific factual knowledge will soon become obsolete in the age of the information explosion. Instead, the Core attempts to teach the "forms of inquiry" and "approaches to knowledge"--essentially, ways of thinking--associated with each of the Core fields, irrespective of factual content. It ends up doing neither...
Other medications being used for psychiatric or neurological conditions are also showing some promise. Flupenthixol, currently prescribed overseas for schizophrenia, seems to soften the "crash," a unique combination of depression and craving that follows one cocaine binge and typically leads to another round. In preliminary trials on a group of ten Bahamian crack addicts seeking treatment, researchers from Yale found that even low doses kept users off cocaine for the two-month duration of the trial. Another drug, carbamazepine, long taken to prevent seizures, has proved to be moderately effective against cocaine craving. In tests this year...
