...Alger and Benjamin Franklin notwithstanding. Halberstam goes on (and on) to maintain that the Chandlers "in effect invented" Southern California, just like their political hired-gun/reporter Kyle Palmer invented Richard Nixon in the late 1940s, just like the Times's protective coverage of Nixon made him the paranoid schizo he turned...

...Coming from Jerry Belson (Smile, TV's Dick Van Dyke Show), this is especially depressing. Belson wastes energy on repetitive slapstick bits that show the hero's bungled suicide attempts; The End's second half bogs down describing an unfunny friendship between Sonny and a clownish schizo (a mugging Dom DeLuise) whom he meets at a nuthouse. Serve in a Toronto beauty salon. Now take one long-haired schizo on the lam from the local loony bin, throw in a few touches of outward normalcy--a good eye for fashionable apparel, decidedly hetero leanings, and a good old-fashioned motherly instinct--and dash with an urge to write whacked-out tales for her beloved fellow "crazies" in a bulky...

...McLaren, there isn't all that much to say. Her pixie of a schizo is hardly the ideal showcase for a promising actress, requiring little more than an ability to play out the chilling delusions of a cute kid who's pretty bonkers...
