...other is the only thing that really interests him. It is thus natural for him to see Ludwig's molars as the mirror of his soul, while ignoring the fact that quite another side of the royal character was expressed in such glorious excesses as the romantic Schloss Neuschwanstein, the rococo Linderhof, and the unfinished imitation of Versailles, Schloss Herrenchiemsee. Ludwig's edifice complex may nearly have bankrupted his kingdom and cost him his throne, but he was, lunatic or not, the last great master builder of the Romantic...
...funny, disturbing, exhausting and massive novel, mind-fogging in its range and permutations, its display of knowledge and virtuosity-a metaphysical, phenomenological, technological Mad Comic. The author seems to have read and understood everything from quantum mechanics, probability theory and engineering manuals to the labels on bottles of 1920 Schloss Vollrads, Tarot cards and rock lyrics. This, and much more, Pynchon catalogues and tickles into fantasies so elaborately detailed that most of his readers will come away feeling illiterate in the terms of the 20th century...
...Communist Party has only about 25,000 members, many of them apparently were bused into Kassel. They were joined by several hundred East Germans who crossed the border for the day. As Stoph drove with Brandt along a H-mile route to the conference site in Kassel's Schloss Hotel, he was greeted by a sea of red flags, cheers and shouts of "Recognition now!" Rightists whistled and hooted at Stoph, but they were outnumbered more than 10 to 1 by the 8,000 or so Communist demonstrators...
Poisoned Darts. Anouilh's hero, Antoine de St. Flour, is dead when the curtain rises. A famed French playwright who retired from the world to a Bavarian Schloss on his 50th birthday, he has been killed in a shotgun accident that may have been a suicide. A group of characters from his past have been summoned for the reading of the will. They make up a nicely varied assortment: two ex-wives-one of them an old dreadnought of an actress superbly played by Françoise Rosay-three mistresses and three men, including a dyspeptic theater critic, jealous...
...time-155 long minutes of it-goes by, our boys storm, fight and bluff their way past the usual cretinous Nazis, snatch the general and head back down the mountain. Along the way, they slaughter a couple of hundred Germans, blast the Schloss, battle the bad guys to the death on top of a cable car, knock out a bridge and cripple an airport. Not bad for a night's work...
