...What's gribenes? Gribenes have been referred to as Jewish popcorn or kosher pork rinds. It's basically chicken skin fried in schmaltz. They're crispy and mixed with fried onions. I'm telling you, when you have it with chopped liver, it's the most incredible thing because you get this crunch and this surge of chicken flavor. I mean, listen - what's the best part of chicken? The skin, right...

...what happened to him (I’ll give you a hint—it involves a note in his pocket which reads “I don’t ever want to see you again”), but most of the lyrical content vacillates between drivel and schmaltz. Yet in order to maintain commercial success, perhaps NFG need do little more than tweak their music for an era unenthused with pop-punk and make angst-ridden songs about abortive romances. ...perfect little theme for lovebirds on the go. All in all, “Traffic and Weather” is more than a solid effort. Granted, its thematic ideas border on gimmicky at times, but the work as a whole manages to never cross the line between poignancy and schmaltz. Perhaps the strongest criticism of this album is that its charmingly packaged and charmingly delivered songs lack any hidden depth. There is little to be gained from repeated listenings, as most of the record’s meaning is offered up the very first time. Fortunately, each song is charming...

...Good News for People Who Love Bad News” proved anything, it was that Brock had enough genius to turn a shambling mess into a successful pop album. The lonely twang of early Modest Mouse songs may have been traded in for a gigantic layer of schmaltz and glittery hooks, but the band’s even more fatalistic than ever. Brock has described the album as a “nautical balalaika carnival romp,” which gives some insight into the controlled chaos that dominates each song. This album doesn’t necessarily break...
