There is in the University only one group that would seem to have the competence to make decisions on how the Freshman Seminars might find paths of general education between overspecialization and the amorphous schmoo. That group, not surprisingly, is the Committee on General Education. At the very least, it has experience with administering courses that attempt to feed students sufficient information to make discussion meaningful and at the same time to train them to think about concepts unusually significant to their civilizations.
