Russian naval strength is growing. Western military men have known for some time that Russian shipyards were busily building a big fleet of German-designed "Schnorkel" submarines-fast, long-range craft which are almost proof against currently known detection devices. This week, in its newly published 1949-50 edition, Britain's authoritative Jane's Fighting Ships reported that Russia already has at least 360, and possibly 460, of such submarines in service. Originally Russia expected to have 1,000 Schnorkels in operation at the end of 1951. Jane's doubts Russia's capacity to build fast...
...much to be feared as any weapon in the arsenal, says Dr. Bush, is the submarine, now able to stay submerged for long periods "with only a small end of a pipe [the schnorkel] sticking out like a swimmer breathing through a straw," able to outrun pursuers and overtake fast convoys, and carrying long-range homing torpedoes which could be fired from a point beyond the earshot of sonar. The Nazis had been a few months too late with their undersea engine of destruction. But there it is now, says Bush, a heritage of German ingenuity: "one of our greatest...
...growing pattern of joint defense. Both Washington and Ottawa want a pool of officers and men who know how both services work. Recently Canada's Naval Air Group 18 finished an intensive three-month course at Quonset Point, R.I. With U.S. pilots, they concentrated on detecting and bombing schnorkel submarines. This month, the Canadian destroyer Halda spent two weeks training in Chesapeake Bay, then sailed with a U.S. Navy amphibious force for a practice assault on the coast of Labrador...
...starred flag of the President of the United States, redesigned by Harry Truman himself, flew at an unlikely place: the stubby mast of a Nazi submarine. The U-2513 was a U.S. prize from the surrendered German Navy, under study because of its revolutionary Schnorkel breathing device (TIME, Feb. 19, 1945). Now, with an all-American crew commanded by Lieut. Commander James Barr Casler, the U-boat was at Key West...
Submarines normally travel only half as fast under water as on it. The Germans reversed this ratio by beefing up the electric batteries which power a submarine when submerged. Model 21 rarely had to surface because it used the "Schnorkel," an extendable air pipe which enables a submarine to recharge the batteries by diesel while submerged (TIME, Feb. 19). In one 45-day patrol, Model 21 U-boat spent all but four days under water. Only drawback: cooped-up living conditions. Some 116 of the formidable Model 21s were built, but minor defects kept them from going...
