Logical Extremes. Born of a solid landowner family in 1883, Webern was trained as a musicologist at the University of Vienna. In 1904, while still a student, he met Arnold Schoenberg and became his lifelong friend and disciple in the cause of overthrowing tonal music. In many areas Webern took Schoenberg's innovations and carried them to logical extremes. When Schoenberg dissolved traditional tonality but continued to work with late Romantic forms, Webern dissolved those too. He obliterated vertical harmonies, broke up melodies into one-or two-note fragments for each instrument and swept away all sense of development...

...SIEGFRIED IDYLL; HINDEMITH: TRAUERMUSIK (Angel). This is an intimate and unpretentious performance, largely due to the warmth that Daniel Barenboim elicits from the English Chamber Orchestra. The Siegfried Idyll sounds like what it was meant to be: a lullaby. The Schoenberg piece, one of the composer's very early works, and Hindemith's mourning music for viola and strings, have great spirit. Barenboim's first recording of modern works augurs well for the future...

Franz Werfel, Alma Mahler Werfel, Max Reinhardt, and several society beauties of the '30s are only slightly disguised. The author mocks, but he also burnishes his characters with an élan found all too rarely in current fiction...
