Things got downright bitchy when Princeton, in October 1986, launched its Scholars Program, which awarded $1,000 "research" scholarships to top students regardless of need. According to the minutes of a January 1987 Overlap meeting, "everyone agreed that this program has caused much unhappiness at all levels of the administration at other schools."
