EDITOR'S NOTE: TIME Daily writer Frank Pellegrini, at a ripe 27 years, has taken a leave of absence to join the Army Reserve. He is currently undergoing basic training - boot camp - and then will spend several months in an Army journalism school. Given the difficulty the armed forces are experiencing in recruiting qualified young people these days, we think his experiences and impressions are worth sharing. ...young children and their parents, while cigarette makers, warned off their youngest consumers and such severely critized campaigns as the cartoonish Joe Camel, are now doubling their attempts to seduce the next age segment, young adults. A suggestion: Perhaps antismoking campaigns should be retooled to address kids in high school or just heading off to college. Otherwise it could be one heck of a deadly generation...
