...There is, of course, an elaborate museum of the disaster. I found its walls decorated with grisly photographs from August 1945, and crayon drawings that children had done to depict the blast and horror. The Japanese bring schoolchildren by the thousands to see the museum, that they might remember. One bright-faced little boy smiled at me (I was obviously an American) and, practicing his English, chirped: "Murderer! Hello...
There's considerably more teaching freedom in a program called Core Knowledge. It was fashioned by University of Virginia English professor E.D. Hirsch Jr., author of the best seller Cultural Literacy, on the premise that there's a canon of facts that all schoolchildren should know. In lieu of precise lesson plans, teachers are told that third-graders, for example, should study the Punic Wars and sixth-graders selections from Shakespeare. "There's been a real diffuseness in curricula," says former Education Secretary William Bennett, whose new book The Educated Child lays out a grade-school curriculum based on Core...
What draws us close are accidents--catastrophes to which we attempt to assign blame or affix explanations but which we know intuitively to be inexplicable. In the past year, a teacher and 12 schoolchildren were shot down by schoolchildren in Colorado; 12 people died building a bonfire in Texas; six fire fighters died fighting a blaze in a warehouse in Massachusetts; six Marines and a Navy man fell to their death in a helicopter exercise off the coast of San Diego. Our insistently enlightened minds leap to "solve" such things, but their effect on our spirits has more...
...barely two years as CEO, Ivester appears to have done what no mere soft-drink rival could have hoped to accomplish--dimmed the luster of one of the world's brightest brands. It wasn't just Coca-Cola's seven-quarter-long profit slide. When dozens of Belgian schoolchildren fell sick after drinking Coke products last June, Ivester maintained what looked like an arrogant silence for more than a week before traveling to Belgium to apologize. (The incident resulted in a 65 million-can recall.) Nor did he burnish his company's image by failing to promote Carl Ware, senior...
...king's son in reflecting upon the situation of Anna and his father. Unfortunately, the same can be said about the movie. Though its vignettes are charming and picturesque enough, they lack a unifying, moving message. This is not a bad film--it is entertaining enough to watch the schoolchildren, their instruction by Anna, the arguments between Anna and the king, the revolutionary elements in Siam wreaking havoc, as well as the breathtaking scenery. But it falls short of what it so desperately desires--to be a "moving" epic, even though those two terms are becoming mutually exclusive...
