Navy Seaman Marcus Gill told a Japanese courtroom that he did not force two Marines to join an attack on a 12-year-old Japanese schoolgirl. Gill, accused along with Roderico Harp and Kendrick Ledet of rape, said that Harp and Ledet were the ones who jumped out of their rented car and grabbed the girl. The two Marines insist that they participated in the assault only because they were afraid of Gill. The three face a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted. A verdict and sentence are expected January 19, but that could be delayed...

Roderico Harp, one of three American servicemen accused of raping a 12-year-old Okinawan schoolgirl, told a packed Japanese courtroom that U.S. military investigators coerced him into confessing to the crime. Harp, a 21-year-old Marine, testified at the Naha District Court that investigators from the Naval Criminal Investigative Services woke him at four in the morning two days after the incident. Ties with Japan have been strained, first after the heavy pressure from Washington to absorb more U.S. goods, more recently after the rape of an Okinawan schoolgirl allegedly by three U.S. servicemen.
