...Charles Bukowski, who wrote the semi-autobiographical script. Now Bukowski has a terrific literati-on-the-skids persona; more downwardly mobile than Kerouac or Burroughs, more degenerate than Ginsberg. He came of age as a writer in the same kind of desolate, marginal, flophouse and seedy bar milieu that Schroeder evokes so effectively in the film. And he's a fine writer--the problem is that you'd never know it from the script, which struck me as the work of a pretentious, narcissistic hack...

One of the party's greatest problems has been the absence from the race of some of the best potential vote getters: Bill Bradley, Mario Cuomo and Sam Nunn. Last week these noncandidates were joined by another refusenik: Colorado Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, who had been vigorously testing the waters since June, announced in Denver that she would not plunge in officially. Since the nomination campaign began with high hopes, all the news has been negative for the party: Hart's and Biden's crackups, the refusal of such powers as Mario Cuomo and Sam Nunn to enter, the persistence of the demeaning seven-dwarfs metaphor.
