...taxi driver knows the latest back stage gossip from the opera house. The maid hums Schubert lieder while brewing coffee. The shopkeeper can debate the baton technique of leading conductors. Throughout Austria, everybody seems to be caught up in music, whether as a cultural pursuit, political issue, spectator sport, historical tradition or simple daily pleasure. Other countries may name their streets after composers, but Austria must be the only place where a crack train is called the Mozart Express, and where the national airline has planes called Beethoven, Schubert and Bruckner. Even affairs of state become insignificant next...

...Princeton Glee Club did produce musical sound that was worth listening to. Conductor Walter Nollner, elicited a kind of breathy pianissimo that was marred only by the group's inability to produce a solid, healthy forte. ...fact, he adds, the Beatles' haunting composition, She's Leaving Home-one of twelve songs in the Sgt. Pepper album-"is equal to any song that Schubert ever wrote." Conductor Leon ard Bernstein's appreciation is just as high; he cites Schumann. As Musicologist Henry Pleasants says: "The Beatles are where music is right...

Curiously enough, however, the Schubert was one of the most enjoyable performances I have heard all summer. The three musicians had relinquished their white jackets in deference to the heat, and the sight of Schubert in shirtsleeves must have recalled many a living-room zilch session to a large part of the audience. The performance itself was the epitome of spontaneity. As such it was in direct contrast to the highly premeditated and overdone performances that have dominated the rest of the concert series. Here finally were three musicians blithely making music--and enjoying it, damn...
