Transforming cartoonists into crusaders was the idea of Garry Trudeau (Doonesbury), who enlisted Charles Schulz (Peanuts) and Milton Caniff (Steve Canyon). Trudeau felt there was no better way to reach people than "through characters they've known all their lives."
