Darkly and deviously the secret struggle between Catholic Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg and Fascist Vice Chancellor Prince Ernst Rudiger von Starhemberg for control of the Austrian Cabinet continued last week amid smoking newspaper headlines. Prince von Starhemberg started matters off last month by waiting until Chancellor Schuschnigg was in Italy to crack wide open the scandal of the failure of Jewish-controlled Vienna Phoenix Life Insurance Co. His plain purpose in smearing this $150.000,000 bankruptcy through the Press was to whip up anti-Semitism in Vienna, cause a Cabinet crisis that would allow his Heimwehr to take over...
Whenever a new crisis arises in Europe, Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg of Austria and Premier Julius Combos of Hungary know what to do. They go to see Benito Mussolini. Hardly had German troops tramped into the Rhineland when Messrs. Schuschnigg & Gombos popped over the Alps. In Rome they attended military reviews, later closeted themselves for hours with Il Duce. What was said privately between Mussolini and his small allies is yet to be told, but it was pretty well indicated last week when bespectacled Chancellor Schuschnigg stood up in the Austrian Diet to demand a new law breaking once more...
...Starhemberg has blamed the murder of his little friend morally on hollow-eyed Major Emil ("Bloodhound") Fey, who was caught by the Nazis with Dullfuss but did nothing to save him. Last week these two potent men tugged two ways at Austria, under the distracted Chancellorship of disheartened Kurt Schuschnigg...
...Major Fey's private army, the Vienna Heimwehr, paraded in honor of Minister of Interior & Public Security Fey. Next day, with Prince von Starhemberg at his elbow, Chancellor Schuschnigg told Minister Fey. as he had often told him before, that all Austria's private armies must be consolidated as a militia. As usual, Major Fey refused. Thereupon, the Chancellor handed President Miklas the Cabinet's resignations. Called right back to form a new Cabinet, Herr Schuschnigg had his list ready. It omitted Major Fey & friends. When Fey saw loyal Starhemberg Heimwehr regiments filling Vienna streets, he knew...
Since Dr. Schuschnigg has been kept in power solely by the support of Italy, France and Britain, the story seemed plausible to such Austrians as managed to read it before police snatched all copies of Dr. Benes' paper off Vienna newsstands. For nearly three years Austrian statesmen have been so sure that Austrians would go Nazi if permitted to vote that the Austrian Government has suppressed all democratic suffrage, constituted what pious Chancellor Schuschnigg likes to think of as a Christian Dictatorship...
