Roughly 40 students of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) unanimously approved the $37,735 budget, allotting $14,500 towards grants the group doles out to graduate students looking to attend conferences in their field or conduct summer research.
Charles R. Marshall, professor of biology and geology, is the newest tenured Faculty member of both the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology.
"We literally looked all over the world, and Professor Marshall stood out as outstanding," said Butler Professor of Environmental Studies Michael B. McElroy, who is chair of the earth and planetary sciences department.
Every one of Harvard's nine schools has surpassed its individual campaign goal, with the slowest to do so--the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS)--coming up with over $1 billion and outpacing its initial goal by $53 million dollars with months still remaining in the campaign effort.
