These opium poppies grow in Turkey. They are not your ordinary Papaver somniferum, but a new strain developed over eleven years by a Soviet scientist from Armenia. Infuriated by his government's decision to end the better-poppy-for-socialism program (his aim was to produce a more potent drug for medical use), Dr. Krikor Grotrian makes a deal to sell the seeds to an Armenian dealer, who smuggles them into Turkey. There, largely because they bear scarlet blooms rather than the more common white petals of opium flowers, they flourish undetected in the hinterland. What Grotrian does not realize...

...plot of Superman smacks of what we have all sopped up since age seven from DC Comics. All the familiar characters are there, along with a few new faces--Max Mencken (remember H.L.) the sleazy reporter for the Daily Planet; Dr. Abner Sedgwick, a frustrated mad scientist from the Metropolis Institute of Technology (MIT); and the Flying Lings, a threesome of oriental acrobats...

...physician, a nutritionist and scientist, and have throughly reviewed the medical literature on breast feeding. I am currently involved in research into the issue, and have for 20 years been writing about it. My interpretation of the scientific evidence leaves absolutely no doubt in my mind, first, that bottle feeding is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries and, second, that the promotion of formulas by corporations such as Nestles has contributed significantly to this most tragic of problems...

...Nestles says that morbidity data are lacking, and imply that there is not good evidence of an increased disease incidence in bottle fed infants. That' is patently untrue. There are dozens of studies which show a much higher disease incidence in bottle fed than in breast fed infants. No scientist or immunologist can deny the fact that human colostrum and breast milk contain substances which confer immunity on the infant and protect him from infections, and that infant formulas do not contain these substances. A study published last year in the prestigious Journal of Pediatrics showed a significantly lower rate...

Goldberger is the most recent, but by no means the only scientist to succumb to the lure of the brainy powerhouse in Pasadena. In fact, Caltech was fashioned from a vocational school into an exclusive West Coast scientific preserve during the early 1900s by deep-thinking migrants from back East. Most notable among them: Chemist Arthur Noyes, a former acting president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who became the first academic vice president of Caltech; University of Chicago Experimental Physicist Robert Millikan, whose prestige attracted many to the young school; and Astronomer and Cosmologist George Ellery Hale, the school...
