MEDEA (London: 3 LPs). Despite its powerful theme-the myth of the murdering mother-this 'opera has been infrequently performed since its composition 171 years ago. One reason is Cherubini's static, pedantic score. Another is the sadistic vocal demands of Medea, the lead role. In this album Gwyneth Jones lamentably fails to match her magnificent voice to the emotional exigencies of Medea, and Lamberto Gardelli's conducting is scandalously lethargic. The Callas version of Medea, released by Mercury in 1958, is an infinitely better listener's choice...
...median boards were: Pubbies--708, Preppies--659, Andover and Exeter--700 (SAT). This is very important. If the two groups were of the same intelligence, the ones with the much better preparation should score higher than, or at least as high as the others. Yet at Harvard Preppies are the ones who score lower. Whether or not they are really less intelligent, judging by Harvard's criteria, they are indeed less intelligent. They may be smarter, but they aren't showing it according to Harvard's indicators. What about narture and inheritance? It has not made them as impressive academically...
...only real excitement in the meet (with the exception of sporadic announcements of the score of the Harvard-B.C. hockey game) was provided by junior Skip Hare in the broad jump. With only one jump left for all competitors, Hare led at 23'3". B.C.'s Dan Burke, however, toped this with a final jump of 23.5 1/2". Undaunted, Hare topped his previous best for Harvard by an inch as he soared 23'6", less than a foot short of Aggrey Awori's Harvard record...
Anil Nayer and Larry Terrell, playing in the one and two slots, picked up their wins with no trouble. M.I.T.'s Rafael Dillingham pressed Nayer only late in the third game when he managed to tie the score at 14-14. But Nayer applied the pressure and picked u the victory...
Harvard's exhibition in the final period was too masterful to be exciting. Denis Sullivan tapped in one at 3:53. Rosenberg called a huddle at the Crimson goal at 4:28 when they decided to put in another. Sullivan helped Red Jahuke score at 10:43; and to rap up a fine game Rosenberg helped Holmes put in the seventh...
